Kuwait City, February 2: Following the President of the United States, Donal Trump’s footsteps the leadership of Kuwait has decided to put a blanket ban on entry of people from five Islamic countries.
The ‘visa ban’ comes as a surprise to many nations around the world. Among the countries that are part of the ban are Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Kuwait considers the five countries unstable and a threat to the oil producing nation’s stability.
According to Gulf media outlets, people from the five countries will not be able to travel to the emirate for business or personal matters. The country that has seen the occasional terrorist attack aims to insulate itself from any possibility of future extremist actions.
According to inside sources, the country’s main terror threats are from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, from Al-Qaeda, as well as from possible Taliban extremists from Pakistan and Afghanistan. ISIS has already managed to strike the country once with a suicide bombing on the 26th of June 2015 at a Shia mosque in Kuwait. TWhile ISIS issued a recorded message claiming that the attack was carried out because Shias were not true Muslims, twenty-seven people were killed and 227 people were wounded.
The threat is particularly enhanced by the fact that the tiny Gulf country shares a border with Iraq. Apart from cracking down on extremist forces, Kuwait has also launched a nationwide DNA mapping database to keep a track of its citizens. While Kuwait claims to be a victim, it must be noted that the country has played a crucial role in funding and propagating extremist ideologies across the world.
Similar notices of a visa ban also emerged in 2011. According to Pakistani newspaper organisation Geo news Pakistan`s ambassador to Kuwait, Ghulam Dastagir apparently claimed that Kuwait hasn’t placed any visa ban on Pakistani nationals.
A report by the group stated ” Ghulam Dastagir said that news on social media about the ban baseless, further adding that same news had sprung up in 2011.Earlier, a newspaper claimed that Kuwait has banned nationals from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It claimed that the ban included on tourism, visit and trade visas as well as visas sponsored by spouses.” (ALSO READ: Open letter to Barack Obama: How about an ‘intolerance’ speech to Donald Trump after #MuslimBan?)
The list of five countries that have come up in Kuwait, is very similar to the seven countries on which the United States has placed a visa ban on. In a rather drastic move, Donald Trump had passed an executive order last week, banning immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries. The executive order also bans the entry and rehabilitation of refugees in the United States.
The countries that have been included in the US’ list of banned once are Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Most of them are strife with war and economically broken down. The executive order also bans entry of those fleeing from war-torn Syria indefinitely from entering or attempting to rebuild their lives in the United States.
While America has been clarified that the ban on immigration would last only for a period of 90 days, there is immense chaos at airports and other immigration checks in the country. Many from countries that are on the banned list have been detained, despite having valid legal documents permitting their visit or stay in the US. The order also calls for a review into suspending the Visa Interview Waiver Program, that permits for a visa-free entry into the United States.
